INFO FOR PEOPLE NEW TO ORIENTEERING

Score events add an unusual dimension to orienteering. There's no set course to follow and no specific controls to find. Instead you grab your map showing all the controls in the whole wood, and try to find as many as you can in the time allowed.

Don't be late back or you'll incur penalty points! As long as you're back on time you'll achieve a positive score so there's no fear of the dreaded "dsq" against your name. Usually there are some controls worth more points than others - but the high scorers tend to be furthest away or hardest to find.

Although this is a Scottish Championship, we'll be having very much local focus too, and would like to encourage all club members and interested non-members to take part.

GENERAL INFO

This event will have indoor assembly at the Eight Acres Hotel, Elgin adjacent to the competition area, which will make for a fun, enjoyable event where everyone who takes part will succeed to some extent!

The preliminary info below will give you all you need in order to enter and plan your day. (now superceded by the final details - see above - but left on for reference)

Terrain Description

Quarrelwood is a steep-sided forested hill with pockets of very complex terrain due to old quarry workings. Runnability varies from very fast to some quite slow sections with heather underfoot.

Courses:

Please enter your relevant age class with the Course options below.

If you want to run a longer course to the one allocated to your age category, you may "run up" a class, eg a talented M14 may run as an M16 on course 2, an M45 may run as an M35 on course 1, or a strong W35 may run as a W21 on course 1.

Online Entries are now closed.

Score classes will incur penalties if you exceed the time limit for the course you have entered at the rate of 20 points per whole minute and 1 point for every 3 seconds thereafter. This is based on SOA guidelines.

We want to make this event totally inclusive for ALL, including the very young, but with the temptation for children to venture "off trail" we understand how parents of less-experienced and younger children will be reluctant to let them venture off alone. We also recognize that the biggest challenge for children is keeping track of time! So parents are welcome to shadow younger children on Course 3 and act as timekeeper!  Being a Scottish Championships, any children who are shadowed will not be eligible for prizes but they will get all the excitement of taking part - please indicate whether shadowing when you do your on-line entry.

*NB - A shadowing parent wishing to run competitively in one of the senior classes must complete their own run before shadowing their child.
