This event is the 1st of our Saturday League (ok it's on a Sunday....) and the Moray & Nairn Schools League for 2017.

For Moravian members, we'll be doing our annual awards presentations in the function suite immediately after the event. Please stay for this if you possibly can. There will be no refreshments laid on but you are welcome to bring your own.

Quarrelwood is the area of woodland to the North of the A96 as you approach Elgin from the West. It's a glorious area with terrific views from the hill top, a great network of tracks and trails as well as areas of very intricate contours left over from quarrying in the olden days. A perfect area for orienteering that allows us to cater for all ability levels.

We will be based at the Eight Acres Hotel (function room) at the rear of the hotel (on the subject of which you might find this story interesting).

You'll find the course info below. Athough there are no official prizes at this event, there will be a special "King of the Mountain" prize on each course for whoever is fastest on a specified (uphill!) leg (see below).

We would appreciate you pre-notifying your attendance by 12th Jan on our entry poll to make sure we have the right number of maps (see note at top of this section).

Courses available:
Long Light Green (technical difficulty level 4-5) 4.5 Km (135 metres climb)
Short Light Green (difficulty as above but less physical) 3.7 Km (115 metres climb)
Orange (tech difficulty level 3) 2.9 Km (75 metres climb)
Yellow (tech difficulty level 2) 2.4 Km (75 metres climb)
The shorter version of the Light Green has been added (8th Jan) to allow people to run a more techincal course without quite the same physical challenge. Check the times from last year as a guide to how long you might expect to take before deciding which course to enter.
The "King of the Mountain" prize will be for leg 5 on Light Green (both Long & Short variants), Leg 3 on Orange and Leg 1 on Yellow

Schools League Info

Anyone attending School in Moray or Nairn is automatically entered in to the Schools League competition. This is Round 1 for the 2017 league so please encourage others from your school to help make up a team.

On the day, remember to give the name of your school on your entry form. The best 4 competitors from each school count for the teams but any number can take part.

Schools League competitors can run on any course - higher points can be scored by successfully completing the longer/harder courses but only by achieving a clear round. Shadowing by parents is allowed on the shortest course, but not on the others. Secondary and primary pupils will be scored separately. See the 'Leagues' menu for schools competition information.

Please register as an individual, but you're welcome to run with a friend and help each other out as you go. For groups of 3 or more running together, only 2 individual times can count for your school team score. This is to make it fair for the majority of more experienced juniors who do the course on their own or as pairs. It's the best 4 times that count for the Schools League - you can see the full rules and information HERE.

Press and Photography

Previews and post-event reports for all our events appear in the local press. We often take photos at events that may be used in the press, but will not name anyone under 18 without parental consent. You can see previous press reports in our press album on Facebook.

It entitles you to £1 off your entry fee for this event as well as discounted entry at all Moravian events, and most events organized by other clubs. If you'd like to become a member, please click HERE - your membership will be valid until the end of 2017.

Please note that non-members of an orienteering club are only covered under our insurance for 3 events.

Information for parents "shadowing" junior runners

Adults shadowing juniors only need pay for the junior entry. Please allow your son/daughter to do most of the navigation themselves. If you are doing all the navigation for them (ie they're chasing you round the course), please let us know at registration so we can note you down as "non competitive" or register you as an adult.

We encourage adult "shadowers" to help out if you see your children going obviously, wrong or getting stuck, but please wait for them to ask you for help before stepping in. That's all part of the learning process and helps build their self-confidence. This also makes it fair for the children that do the course all by themselves. Thank you.
